Editing citations is the very last thing you should do in the document. You will need to delete all field codes in the document, Word's as well as EndNote's. This affects som of the Word functions. If you delete EndNote's field codes only, at the same time margins and page size may change in some sections of the document and also pagination and styles may change.

Important! Delete the field codes in a copy of your document. You cannot undo the action. Examples of Word functions that makes use of field codes and consequently will be inactivated are updating lists like table of contents, table of figures, table of quotes and indexes.

Follow these steps:

  1. Select all text in the document by pressing Ctrl+A (Windows) or CMd+A (Mac OS).
  2. Press Ctrl+6 (Windows) or Cmd+6 (Mac OS) to remove all Microsoft Word field codes.

Now you can edit the citations and, of course, also the reference list.

For more information on how to edit the reference list only, read here.
